Proposals by Hodgson Brothers for the recommissioning and extension of a sandstone quarry, disposal of quarry waste and subsequent restoration at Leipsic Quarry, Moscow, Alston, were permitted in December by Cumbria CC. The site had not operated for about five years. The applicant, who currently works Flinty Fell Quarry at Nenthead, sought permission to reopen the quarry until 2012, and to increase the site area from 0.6ha to 1.2ha. It was proposed to continue extraction to a maximum depth of 10m. The sandstone would be extracted using a mechanical excavator. No processing of building stone would take place on site. The material would be transported to the applicant's processing shed at Bayle Hill near Alston. The applicant would extract 40,000t of saleable sandstone over a 10 year period (le about 4,000t annually). During this time the site would be worked on a regular basis but not continuously.
