Extension to the sand and gravel quarry at Brocklewath, Great Corby, Carlisle for Mr W Roper was permitted by Cumbria CC in November. The 2.2ha extension involved a ten year operation producing an average of 15,000 tpa, progressively restored to an agricultural afteruse. Need for the development was argued on the basis of the coarse deposit at Brocklewath, which is in short supply in the area. Although the landbank for all types of sand and gravel in the northern area stood at almost 15 years, need for the development could be demonstrated. Proposals to extract sand and gravel and restore land at a lower level to agricultural use at Tattershall Thorpe were reported in Mineral Planning 90 (p.51). Two applications by Woodhall Spa Sand and Gravel Ltd were approved by Lincolnshire CC subject to the completion of a Planning Obligation. In the interim, however, the applicant requested that the conditions that were approved be amended to reflect a change to the proposal and a potential conflict with the terms of its lease. It was recommended in January that the applicant's request was approved and that the conditions be amended.
