Proposals by Cumbria Stone Quarries for an extension to Birkhams Quarry, Sandwith, Whitehaven were approved by Cumbria CC in March. Birkhams Quarry has been a source of Red St Bees Sandstone since the eighteenth century. Cumbria Stone Quarries, which has operated the site, north west of the operated the site, north west of the village of Sandwith, since 1981, sought to extend the 0.75ha site by 1ha. The current planning permission expires in July 2011, but the reserves are virtually exhausted due to geotechnical difficulties. The site is within the St Bees Site of Special Scientific Interest and St Bees Heritage Coast. It is a designated Regionally Important Geological Site and lies adjacent to an area of County landscape. The public footpath immediately south of the current site boundary forms part of the Cumbria Coastal Way. Two residential properties lie about 20m to the east of the existing quarry boundary. Given the sensitivity of the site's location, this application was accompanied by an Environmental Statement.
