A planning application by UK Coal Ltd for the disposal of colliery spoil by raising the height of the existing tip at Welbeck Colliery was permitted by Nottinghamshire CC in February. The key issues related to visual impact, increased height of the tip, stability and restoration. Colliery spoil from Welbeck Colliery (comprising coarse discard and dry fines) is presently disposed of on the spoil heap west of the colliery to a maximum height of 118m. It was proposed to increase that level. Reserves at the colliery are expected to last at least into the medium term, defined as a 10-12 year period, and to remain viable the colliery must have access to a secure economic means of spoil disposal. At current rates of production, the approved disposal scheme had a remaining life of 7-8 years from 2001, and to achieve sufficient capacity for the 10-12 year disposal period required, a minimum additional capacity of 1.27 cu.m was required. It was proposed to amend the existing spoil disposal scheme within its current boundaries to a maximum height of 130m.
