Collaborations, expansions and diversifications characterised the copper sector in the world, during the first three months of 2002.Among the key happenings that can be looked forward to in the copper sector in India in the coming months, is the divestment of the 98.5 per cent stake held by the government of India in Hindus tan Copper Limited. There are rumours that Sterlite Industries Limited may bid for this. If Sterlite succeeds in the purchase, it will become a multi-metal giant, dealing in zinc, copper and aluminium, with Hindustan Zinc Limited and Balco already under its belt. Meanwhile, the provisional prices for copper products have been announced for the month of April. Continuous Cast Rods of 8 mm thickness are priced at Rs. 1,09,000 per ton, while Cathodes and Wire Bars will come at Rs. 1,03,400 per ton and Rs. 1,16,015 per ton.
