Ultra-compact 180° magnetic spectrometer for intermediate energy electron measurement

摘要

We report on a general design of a novel magnetic analyser for measurement of electron energy spectra ranging from a few eV up to 50 keV. The ultra-compact vacuum chamber (volume < 20 cm{sup}3) design employs a variable magnetic field, generated from two coils, to deflect incoming electrons through a fixed arc having a constant radius of curvature. A test-particle code is employed to evaluate the operation of the device using the experimentally obtained magnetic field distribution within the spectrometer's chamber and indicates that an energy resolution of ΔE/E < 10% is readily obtainable. Finally, the device is implemented to measure spectra of electrons generated and accelerated via surface plasmon (SP) waves on a thin gold film.
