The synthesis, structures and reactivity of unsymmetrical multiply-bonded dirhenium(IV, II) and dirhenium(III,II) complexes that contain the bis2-(diphenylphosphino)phenylether ligand (L~1) are described, including the isolation and structural characterization of the novel terephthalate-bridged tetrarhenium complex Re_2Cl_4(#eta#~3-L~1)_2(#mu#-O_2CC_6H_4CO_2) in which there is weak electronic coupling between the pairs of dirhenium centers.
