Asia pulls crude from the Atlantic Basin Crude demand is reviving in Asia this quarter, supporting higher prices. While stocks continued to build in the Atlantic Basin throughout most of April and May, Asian refiners - particularly in China and India - are buying crude for processing. Chinese throughputs are now over 7 mbpd, close to the record high set in June 2008. Crude imports in March and April jumped to 3.9 mbpd from 3 mbpd in the previous two months. India, too, is importing more crude as refinery runs increase. Both countries have recently brought new refineries on stream, adding 1 mbpd to capacity this year.
