Oil prices surged as the fourth quarter began, with the price of Dated Brent rising by 10% in the space of two weeks, reaching a five-month high of $85/bbl. Unlike the brief price surge in early August, which saw prices subsequently fall to the bottom of OPEC抯 unofficial target range just three weeks after reaching their peak, this one has yet to show any sign of running out of steam. Some in OPEC are calling for higher prices, as the purchasing power of their dollar-based incomes fall while imported food prices rise. Spare capacity throughout the oil supply chain ought to limit upward price movements, but only if that capacity is used. Expressing concerns about the strength of demand for its oil, OPEC may not react quickly to quash any rise in prices.
