Tuberculosis: A Worldwide Problem One third of the world population is infected with theMycobacteriurn tuberculosis bacteriurn which causestuberculosis (TB).TB.AIDSand malaria are the threeinfectious diseases clairning the largest nurnber of fatalitiesworldwide. The world Health Organization (wHO)estimatesthat each year 8 to 10 million people beome infected.TBis in particular a disease of the poor and mainly affectsyoung adults in their most productive years. Most TBfatalities are in the developing countries, more than half oftherm in Asia. ln almost all of these countries,multidrug-resistant TB is berning increasingly frequent. This form ofTB is very hard to treat.
