World supply of aluminium remains unbalanced and in surplus. But, producers have made significant in roads into rebalancing the market and catching up to the drastically reduced demand situation. It is now apparent that the bulk of the capacity curtailments have come from Western and Eastern European, North America and African smelters. With Asia excl. China, China, the Middle East and Latin America largely producing at the same rate they were in 2008. China, as always, remains a linchpin in the market. MBR believes that the recent capacity restarts there will ultimately have a negative effect on the global supply demand balance, but it is likely that Chinese producers will limit future capacity restarts as the SHFE price heasd for a correction.
