With alumina spot pricing having fallen below the cost of production, many aluminium smelters are shutting down refining capacity in favour of buying material on the open market. This disconnection between cost and price, which is partly due to a hike in caustic soda pricing, has led Alcoa to begin to investigate more complex methods for alumina pricing than merely charging a percentage of the LME aluminium price. Going forward, MBR does not expect a recovery of alumina prices above $200/ tonne during the first half of 2009.
