Achievement of the cleft lip and palate surgical protocol in the Pediatric Surgery Service of the University Hospital of Los Andes Autonomous Institute

The cleft lip and palate is a congenital craniofacial malformation that occurs by the lack of fusion of the jaws and soft tissues of the embryonic facial processes during intrauterine life. The objective of this research was to describe the achievement of surgical reconstruction protocol lip and / or cleft palate at the Pediatric Surgery Service of the University Hospital of Los Andes Autonomous Institute (IAHULA). The research is descriptive, transectional-retrospective, documentary and multivariable design. The data collection was performed in the Department of Health Statistics of IAHULA. A review of 86 medical records of children born in the IAHULA between 2004 and 2009 was performed. As a result it was observed that the percentage of compliance with the protocol is 73.24 and 26.75 delay, however it was found in the medical records that health problems of patients were the causes of delays. It is concluded that the contribution of this work is to have studied, longitudinally, the process of rehabilitation of 86 children who were treated at the Pediatric Surgery of the IAHULA for 5 years, time set by the protocol, and also to show the obstacles that limit the success of it, to feedback the process for the benefit of better service.
