My mobile phone is so tiny that I can barely fit my fingers on the buttons when I'm trying to dial a number. Memory sticks, computers, cars and ipods - everything seems to be shrinking these days. So it's amazing that nature still holds the final world on packaging. Inside a single acorn is all the information needed to grow a mighty oak tree. Seeds are by far the most common method that flowering plants use to reproduce. When faced with drought, fire or cold, they hunker down through the rough timesinside these life support capsules - and with equal panache, use them to travel the planet in roaring rivers, on the gentlest breeze, between the toes of a paddling duck or, less glamorously, in the dung of a passing elephant. And when the conditions are just right, the seed coats crack and the first sweet spears of green appear.
