Analytical laboratories usually include a standard sample as part of their regular testing procedure. The standard is used either as a base for results or to test the performance of the procedure. In our analytical chemistry laboratory at HortResearchMt Albert, for example, fruit and leaf calcium concentrations are obtained by comparing our results with standard solutions of known calcium concentration. In addition, the performance of the system is checked with each batch of samples by analysing the same ground leaf sample and checking that the results each time are acceptably close to each other, usually +- two per cent.
