Honeywell has miniaturized its enhanced ground-proximity warning systems and cut the price, making the safety benefits available to nearly all general aviation aircraft. EGPWS is a look-ahead system that uses the aircraft's GPS position, a terrain database and computer prediction of the aircraft's flight path to warn pilots when the aircraft will come dangerously close to the ground. The new system for business and general aviation aircraft fits in a 1.5-lb. box about the size of a small paperback book and will sell for $9,250, according to Todd A. Curtis, who heads EGPWS business development for Honeywell.
