Geologists have their maps, geo-cellular models, three-dimensional seismic and visualization rooms. Production engineers can more easily describe concepts through horizontal wellbores, wellheads and surface facilities. Reservoir engineers have a larger challenge to describe recovery processes involving steam in an extremely complex subsurface reservoir. Their tools become plots, figures, white boards, and a lot of arm waving, says Bill MacFarlane, manager of special projects in Nexen Inc.'s synthetic crude oil division.
