摘要

Introduction: Completely edentulous patients who wear dentures are more prone to candidiasis, under certain special conditions like compromised immunity. Besides that, if denture adhesives are also being used and hygiene maintenance is not carried out properly, because of decreased ability of senile patients, the risk factor surmounts. Such situations can be controlled with use of adhesives with anticandidal activity. Therefore, the present study was carried out to develop and evaluate a new combination of denture adhesives with Probiotics.Aim: To evaluate the Colony Forming Units (CFU) of candida after using plain and probiotic added denture adhesive in completely edentulous patients.Materials and Methods: At first, the stability testing for the new product which is a combination of probiotics and denture adhesives was done . The CFU/mL of candida was counted at the baseline and the participants were divided into two groups based on application of plain (group A) and probiotics added adhesives (Group B). The CFU was counted before and after crossover of patients to either group. The statistical tests used were descriptive statistics, repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni test for pair-wise comparison of CFU/mL.Results: The stability test showed that the novel combination was stable for three months. The results revealed a statistically significant decrease in CFU/mL of candida from baseline to post intervention group B (p=0.001), and after crossover of participants from Group A to Group B. (p=0.01).Conclusion: Therefore, it can be concluded that probiotics can play a significant role in decreasing the amount of candida in edentulous patients.
