摘要

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are a common cause of patient morbidity and mortality in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates approximately 2 million HAIs associated with nearly 100,000 deaths occur annually among hospitalized patients. In the past decade, HAIs have been pushed to the forefront as a national patient safety initiative spurred by the Institute of Medicine's report, To Err is Human: Building A Safer Health System. This report drew attention to HAIs as "preventable harms." The follow-up report, Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century identified six aims of a high-quality healthcare system—effectiveness, equity/timeliness, patient-centeredness, safety, and efficacy.2 Consumer advocacy groups, legislative bodies, and accreditation organizations have served as catalysts for hospitals to allocate money and resources to infection control programs. (See The cost of HAIs,)
