Experimental mechanical grape harvesting began in the Nineteen Fifties in the USA, at first using a cutter bar and then a mechanical shaker-catching device. The first mechanical grape harvesters became commercially available in the Nineteen Seventies. They were over-row machines fitted with two types of harvesting systems: · the vertical-shaking head pickers, suitable for vineyards, such as the Geneva double curtain (GDC); and · the horizontal slappers, suitable for hedgerow vineyard systems.
