Brazil’s recession continues to keep zinc demand low. AME expects Brazil’s zinc demand to fall 2% to 197kt in2016, 16% lower than the five-year average. While the new Brazilian President, has renewed confidence andoptimism, this is failing to translate into economic momentum as production across all sectors decline. In thehope of improving economic momentum, Brazil recently cut interest rates by 25 basis points to 14%. AME doesnot expect this to materially affect the country’s GDP outcome in 2016, and has forecast a contraction of 3.3%.In 2017, a GDP growth of 0.5% is expected.
