It's not often a gardening story hits the national headlines. However, by the time you're reading this, all of the hoopla surrounding the new USDA Hardiness Zone map probably will have faded. The USDA's announcement came out between my receiving thiscolumn assignment and its first deadline. So I don't know whether to thank the USDA for pretty much writing the introduction or stealing my horticultural thunder. Even so, most gardeners didn't fall off of their chairs when hearing about the new map. Askeen observers of weather and climate, the map isn't telling us anything we don't know already: Things are warming up and because of that, our gardens are changing, somewhat.
