As I round the corner of my house to enter the backyard, the first garden to my left has always held my interest. At first, I wasn't sure why this garden was so beautiful. It contains a mixture of perennials, including hostas, dianthus, astilbes and coralbells, with obscure flower colors for most of the growing season and different foliage colors. That's my answer. It's all about foliage color! Nurseries make buying plants difficult. They display gorgeous blooms atop green foliage, and those flowersare hard to pass up. It's easy to accidentally create an all-green garden. Not that green leaves are all bad—the conventional green makes the other foliage colors stand out. I look for a range of colors from unusual blues, to calm silver and gray, through bright red and deep purple, all the way to glowing yellow and chartreuse. These colors combine amazingly well with the established green garden, providing all-season interest.
