Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) is a member of the Umbelliferae, or parsnip, family along with the morefamiliar carrot and Queen Anne's lace. This aggressive weed from Eurasia can invade and greatly change a wide variety of open habitats. Wild parsnip has long been found in states south of Minnesota; the University of Wisconsin has a sample collected in 1894. But it is a relative newcomer to central Minnesota, at least in the amounts now being found. As well as invading native plant communities, wild parsnip has a phyto-phototoxic sap, which can cause a severe rash when it touches bare skin.
