Chiral Electrode Behavior of Magneto-electrodeposited Silver Films

For the past decade, the applications of electromagnetic processing of materials (EPM) have been expanding into various fields, such as steel-making industry, fluid dynamics, morphology and texture control of materials, and environmental approach. If the Lorentz force or magnetic force allows control of chemical reaction processes considerably, the electromagnetic processing of chemical reactions would be a breakthrough for not only EPM but also chemical industry. It is thus worthwhile to challenge the EPM application to chemical reactions. One of the most feasible applications is electrolysis and electrodeposition under magnetic fields, which are called magneto-electrolysis and magneto-electrodeposition, respectively. It is known that the Lorentz force induces spiral structures in the two-dimensional growth of magneto-electro-deposited metals and conducting polymers, and the three-dimensional helical structures in silicate membrane growth. Chiral structures can be used for the enatioselec-tive recognition of chiral molecules, which is one of the most important processes in biochemistry. If the chiral structures can be induced in nanometer scales on the mag-neto-electrodeposited films, such film surfaces would serve as an enantioselective sensor.
