We are all aware that liquid crystals lend themselves ideally for raising the interest of the public towards current science and technology. This may have two reasons. First, liquid crystals, or better their textures, are full of shapes, defects and colours (Figure 1). They are aesthetically pleasing and may well be hung into a museum of modern art. One just has to look at the beautiful images in the International Liquid Crystal Society picture gallery to understand exactly what I intend to convey. Second, the public can directly relate to liquid crystal technology, via their flat panel screens, laptops, tablets and mobile phones. There is hardly a single household on earth, which does not call at least one device with an LCD their own. Liquid crystals are used in technological applications which directly affect each member of the general public.
