EU clamps down on salmonella: The European Commission has set new targets to decrease and eventually eliminate levels of salmonella in eggs. Ireland to rationalise beef sector: Some 16 of Ireland's 36 abattoirs are set to close under a government-sponsored plan to rationalise the country'sbeef sector in view of an expected reduction in output. The Irish High Court has ruled that the scheme is legal, despite misgivings on the part of farmers. US cleared to sell beef to Japan: A two-year ban on US beef imports has been lifted by Japan as concerns over the threat posed by BSE have now been addressed by US meat packers. Prior to the ban's entry into force, Japan was the biggest single market for US beef exporters.
