摘要

The processes for direct and smelting reduction have the advantage not being dependent on coke. These processes will gain importance for mini mills on the basis of electric steel making in the case of DR plants and SR plants or partly as replacement for smaller blast furnace in the case of SR plants. The world wide DRI capacity and production increased continuously with a utilisation rate of total installed capacity reaching 97 % at a production of 45 millions t DRI in 2002. A further growth can be expected for the future to supply high quality charge material for electric steel making. The only industrial applied smelting reduction units are the Corex and Finex processes. The four operated plants produced 2.66 millions t hot metal in 2002. The Finex configuration commissioned in Pohang in March 2003 can be able to set new standards and replace existing coke oven, sinter plant and blast furnace configurations in Pohang.
