Catastropbes like Hurricanes Katrina and Rita demonstrate the benefits ofwireless communications between truck and office. Among the many lessons Hume ne Katrina taught first responders and utility workers alike was this: Reliable communications systems have joined the ranks of basic necessities. "I remember a deputy sheriff from St Bernard Parish saying, 'I used to think that food and water were the most important things in life Now I understand it is water and communications," says Billy Gibson, communications director at the Association of Louisiana Electric Cooperatives "He was absolutely tight It was totally dark for 90,000 square miles-no cell phones, no electricity We were completely in the dark in many ways We were reduced to carrier pigeoncommunication". With the phone lines down and cell phone service sketchy at best, Gibson remembers, the first request from hurricane-battered co-ops-along with everyone else trying to recover from the devastating storm-was for satellite phones In addition to line personnel, out of state co-ops delivered WildBlue satellites for Internet communication.
