On December 16,1811, a pair of massive earthquakes centered along the present-day southeastern Missouri-Arkansas border shook the area so violently that tsunami-like waves rose up on the nearby Mississippi River and swamped boats while buildings sankinto deep fissures in the ground. Shocks radiating outward were felt far and wide—sidewalks reportedly cracked in Wash ington, B.C., bricks fell from chimneys in Charleston, S.C., and church bells clanged away 1,000 miles distant in Boston, Mass.
