Aqueous saline solutions of DNA in the presence of poly-N-vinylpyrroli done (PVP), poly-N-vinylpyrrolidone containing a terminal amino group (PVP-NH2), and a star-shaped polymer (PVPstar) formed via the covalent bonding of PVP-NH2 chains to a fullerent, C-60 core (PVP-NH-C-60) were studied using hydrodynamic and optical methods. The concentration of NaClin the solution was 0.005 and 0.15M, while the molar ratio r of the number of PVP monomeric units to that of nucleotide pairs of DNA was varied from 0.5 to 10. Viscometry measurements demonstrated that these polymers interact with DNA to form complexes with a helical structure more compact than that of the free DNA molecule. The strongest effect of shrinkage of the DNA was produced by PVPstar. The specific volume of the solute particles decreased gradually and uniformly with increasing r at r <= 1 (for DNA + PVPstar complexes, by half in the 0.005 M NaCl, and by a factor of 1.25 in the 0.15 M NaCl), remaining constant at higher r within 1 <= r <= 10. The circular dichroism spectra and persistence length of DNA were found to independent of r. Various models of the DNA interaction with the polymers were discussed.
