The rising use of coconut methyl ester as a fuel in the Philippinesshould increase planting and reduce imports of fossil fuel. This willopen a new source of export revenue, provide fuel security for thecountry in times of fuel shortages, and address air pollutionproblems. Yvonne Agustin of the United Coconut Association of thePhilippines writes. The energy crisis and the thrust towardsa cleaner and greener environment haveled the Philippines to look at alternativefuels. Popular alternative fuel choicesare bioethanol and biodiesel. Philippinebiodiesel is primarily coconut methyl ester (CME),which is derived from coconut oil. CME has traditionally been marketed as an intermediate oleochemical product for processing by consumers intoeither coconut fatty alcohol or fatty acids for use asmaterial for such products as surface active agents,cleansing preparations and personal care products.
