The concept of a psychological contract offers a useful perspective on employer-employee relationships. The researcher Edgar Schein describes a psychological contract as the unwritten expectation that exists between the organisation and employee. It relates to mutual benefit and duty existing in an employment relationship. The psychological contract may never actually be signed by the contracting parties, but it does explain a lot of what occurs. This concept is increasingly being used to define andunderstand the employment relationship.
