Fruit-growing is a high-risk business, with numerous unforeseen events and problems impacting on the health of the business. Some factors the grower can control. These include pest and disease control, harvest management, planting decisions, production policy and choice of packer or exporter. Others, such as the weather, market conditions and exchange rates for instance, you have little control over. When you cannot control an aspect of orchard production, you have to manage the situation as well aspossible in order to limit its potential to harm the business. There is usually not a lot that can be done to change the magnitude of these factors, but with good long-range planning and a proactive approach it is possible to successfully grow through them.
