In an aircraft, geometrical notches can not be avoided. The ideal, un-notched structure is disturbed by many hatches, windows, doors and by thousands of rivet holes. Notches generally reduce the tensile strength of the material. This behavior is often referred to as "notch sensitivity" for geometrical notches and as "residual strength" for crack type defects. The residual strength of FRMLs depends both on the type of laminate and the nature of the flaw present (1-2). The factors that can effect the residual strength of FRMLs include the volume fraction of the constituents, the fiber direction, the base metal properties, the type of fiber, the fiber/matrix interface and the state of residual stress in the laminate.
