Back in 1987 when I sent in my check to become a member of SAMPE, I would never have guessed that I would be writing this column. I had visited an ISSE in Anaheim when I was at another conference and experienced the International SAMPE. After joining I became involved in the local Baltimore-Washington chapter primarily for the monthly meetings (faculty were treated the same as students). Over the next few years, I realized that my research network was based on the contacts made in the local SAMPE chapter. More importantly, those contacts were my friends.
