Everything we touch is made of materials. As varied the materials are around us and the things that they are made into, the building blocks are quite simple. We all recall our high school chemistry class where the wonders of the atom were explored. The number of protons in the nucleus dictates the elemental characteristics of the atom. The presence of electrons negates the positive charge of the protons. Neutrons reside in the nucleus adding to the atomic weight. As carbon-based life forms, our existence is due the presence of some of the lighter elements: Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, and Carbon. Things we call metals are grouped together. We value certain metals because of their relative rarity and perceived usefulness: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Specific isotopes of Uranium and Plutonium can be harnessed to light our cities or to destroy them.
