The recent popularity of The Da Vinci Code has pulled Leonardo Da Vinci's art back into the limelight. But as engineers and scientists already know, Leonardo was a scientist and engineer as well as an artist, and his blending of the disciplines was remarkable. As his engineering sketches - which are almost as familiar as the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper - indicate, the parachute, the helicopter and human anatomy were all subjects of his inquiry and intellect. In a similar mode, the study and advancements of materials and process engineering has evolved through many stages during the centuries and is accelerating in the 21~(st) Century. SAMPE has been in the forefront of this advancement particularly with respect to composite materials and their applications and with new technologies such as nanoscience and technology. The 2007 SAMPE Fall Technical Conference, to be held Oct. 29-Nov. 1 in Cincinnati, Ohio, will explore and continue this advancement of many materials disciplines through its technical program of keynote speeches, plenary sessions, technical program sessions and tutorials. The program will demonstrate the forefront of emerging technologies in engine propulsion materials, nanotechnology for multifunctional materials, composite structural materials and numerous others, while exploring the past contributions and evolution of the materials technologies that have helped shape and enhance our lives today.
