This paper presents a personal view of some of the trends and issues in global forestry based on the author's experience in running the peer-review process for nearly 1,100 voluntary and invited papers to the XII World Forestry Congress (Quebec City,September 2003). It also draws on his experience working for FAO as Director responsible for forestry information and for preparation of FAO's inputs to international conventions and meetings and in peer-reviewing for three technical journals (Unasylva,the International Forestry Review and Forest Ecology & Management).
