James Ogilvie, at the annual excursion in 2011, followed up his article of 1985 (Scottish Forestry Vol 39:1) providing The Society with a fascinating glimpse into Sir Walter Scott's forestry work at Abbotsford (see also Scott. For. Vol. 66: 3). The question remains, however: why did an Edinburgh lawyer with a love of history and over-grazed Border hills develop such a love for trees and woods?
