Transformation has been a big word around the rings and corridors of the Pentagon for the last year or so, and what is often held up as a model of transformational achievement by the most senior of DoD personnel is the forthcoming conversion of the oldest four Ohio-class ballistic missile strategic submarines (SSBNs) to more tactically oriented platforms (SSGNs). These platforms would initially carry up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and five or six dozen special operating forces (SOF).
