The new millennium began auspiciously for ocean sciences at the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Division of Ocean Sciences received a 17 percent budget increases in FY 2001-the largest in decades-enabling greater support for disciplinary research, interdisciplinary priority areas and ship costs associated with field investigations. The year also saw the community-based planning efforts that will shape the future of NSF ocean sicences for the next decade and beyond. Two of the major reports than resulted are "Ocean Sciences at the New Millennium" and "Charting the Future of the National Academic Research Fleet."
