Equipment leasing is also know as hire purchase, which well describes the principle underlying this form of financing. A leasing company buys a piece of equipment, which it then owns, and lets it out to a company that takes possession of it and uses it over an agreed period during which it will make regular payments for its use and also take on responsibility for its maintenance and repair. The user has an option to buy the equipment from the leasing company at the end of the period at a pre-agreed residual price.
