Dr. Halpern and associates have spent a great deal of time and effort in a meta-analysis of the cost effectiveness of cervical spine clearance by cervical collar immobilization versus radiographic studies in the trauma patient who could not be evaluated clinically for cervical spine injury because of impaired consciousness, endotracheal intubation, or painful distracting injuries. Using a median of their percentages, there are approximately 8000 such patients in the United States yearly. Their conclusion is that cervical collar treatment is more cost effective than any diagnostic radiographic studies and their evidence is "robust."
