As A SPACE-OBSESSED teenager in the '70s, I wassure that I'd travel in space. My nerdy high school gangwore "L5 in 95" T-shirts, imagining we would help createpermanent colonies at the Lagrangian points of Earth'sorbit. As children we had witnessed the Apollo landingsand may have appreciated their mythical dimensionsmore vividly than the adults around us. We believed thatthe move into space would provide new arenas for humanhabitation and ensure the preservation of Earth's environ-ment and the long-term survival of all terrestrial life. Iwanted to be Dave Bowman from the movie 2001, ridingnew spacecraft to "Jupiter and beyond the infinite."
