All December, Jupiter is just about as big and close as it will appear at its January 5th opposition. Stay up late in the evening to observe it telescopically when it's high in steady air, shining down from Gemini. Any telescope will show Jupiter's four big Galilean moons. Binoculars usually reveal at least two or three, occasionally all four. Identify them with the diagram at left.
