THE KING of the long-period variablestars should reach its peak brightness(about magnitude 3.4) around February3rd, soon after most readers get this issue. Estimate Mira's brightness whenever you stepoutside. Cetus is still fairly high in the south-west in early evening during February andMarch. The italic numbers are comparison-starmagnitudes with their decimal points omitted. Mira's cycles average 11 months long. Atlast year's maximum it shone at its bright-est in a decade, magnitude 2.1. Even if thisyear's maximum turns out to be unusuallyfaint as an aftereffect of the previous one,Mira should still be visible to the unaidedeye as part of the constellation Cetus, asshown at left.
