LOOK AT OUR WORLD, a brilliant blue-and-whiteorb spinning through the star-speckled darkness. Asthe eons tick by, the brown continents slide around theoceanic globe like pieces in a spherical puzzle. The whitepolar caps grow and shrink as Earth wobbles in its orbit.The dayside glints in the light of the Sun. For billions ofyears, the dark of the nightside is broken only by a flash oflightning, or a splash of aurora. And then, after 2 billionyears, a wash of green crawls over the dayside continents. But recently, new lights start dotting the nightside,connecting along tiny threads, and spreading in bright-ening webs. On the dayside, a loose mesh of dark linesis now visible, each swiftly surrounded by patterns ofvegetation. The oceans are now crossed by small, wave-generating objects. And then, little constructions ofrefined metal start jumping off the planet, sending radiopulses toward home, signaling the arrival of curiosity andtechnology. This planet is looking for answers.
