THE RINGS OF SATURN are so spectacular thatthey yank attention away from the planet itself, which isusually rather bland. But this year the rings are turnednearly edge-on to our line of sight (by 2.3° on March 1st,3.4° on April 1st, and 4.1° on May 1st). So now is a finetime to take a closer look at the planet's softly visible darkbelts and bright zones — and any detail that might bedetectable within them. Saturn comes to opposition onMarch 8th and is in fine evening view all spring.
