Newly—updated research shows that the energy balance of biodiesel made from soy oil has increased 73% since 1998 as soybean production, soybean crushing, and biodiesel processing have become more efficient. The research, which was done by the University of Idaho, Moscow, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), showed that for every unit of fossil energy needed to grow soybeans, process soy oil, and make biodiesel, 5.54 units of renewable energy were produced.
